In the Moscow University Library, Khomyuk is continuing her research on what could have triggered the explosion at Chernobyl. After being assigned to a tent, Pavel comes under the watchful eye of a man named Bacho, and is assigned to animal patrol, with orders to "liquidate" any domesticated or wild animals in the exclusion zone surrounding Chernobyl, lest they spread radiation. It has already been determined that the rooftops are too fatal for humans to do work on, and are not strong enough to support remote-control bulldozers. Katya and Nina have enough radioactive debris to become fatal after 1-2 hours, but Masha, the rooftop closest to the open reactor, is dangerous enough to deplete ones life expectancy in a matter of minutes. The three rooftops have also been given names. Each roof contains dangerously radioactive materials, and must be removed. While the reactor's fire has been put out and the chance of radiation seeping into the nearby ground water has been stopped, there are three rooftops surrounding the exposed reactor.
